Sultana Recorded and produced in my DIY studio in London, released in 2019 Sultana is an anti-nationalist album. In our times where nationalist and fascist notions are rising, based on my biography, the way I live and what my work stands for; I saw no other way but to face up, address and challenge these issues through my work. Songs such as ‘Greek Bastards’, ‘Kurdistan’ and ‘Fantasmata’ , ‘Soy la chica en el ciello’ tackle Cypriot, Greek, Kurdish and Catalan nationalism. Having a dual nationality and growing up in Cyprus, I was exposed to strong senses of nationalism by both the Greek-Cypriots towards Greece, and the Turkish Cypriots towards Turkey, reflecting the people’s identity crisis and insecurity. I contend that these people identify with nationalism to cover their own failures and misdeeds and in the process try to prove their own power and righteousness. I stand for people’s freedom to develop their own views independently of nationalistic traits imposed upon them. I support diversity in human development, caring more about the other regardless of their ethnicity. The album has an overall “Sordid Pop” sound: punk, electronic, experimental, Mediterranean pop. More than half the songs are in Greek.
